Meeting Needs, Sharing Hope: A Church Planting Story of Obedience and Gospel Impact

Families begin lining up early.

Some come for food. Others for clothes. Many bring their kids, hoping to leave with backpacks and school supplies for the year ahead. Volunteers move from station to station—serving, organizing, and welcoming. There’s a rhythm to it now, a simple structure that repeats from one event to the next.

More than 1,000 people are being served at this back-to-school outreach.

Haircuts are being given while volunteers hand out backpacks nearby. Along the tables, volunteers offer food, clothing, and hygiene items—meeting real, everyday needs.

But what stands out isn’t just what people receive. It’s what happens while they wait.

An evangelism team moves along the line, talking with people about life, faith, and what they believe—asking questions, listening to stories, and, in the middle of it all, sharing the gospel clearly and personally.

Many came for practical needs, but they’re being invited into something more.

This is what Rescue Shop Church has looked like for T.J. and his team.

Not just inside a building—but out in the community, where real needs meet real hope.

A Simple Yes

Rescue Shop Church started with a man trying to be obedient.

God began stirring in T.J. McDaniel’s heart, and he sensed a clear calling to plant a church. He didn’t have formal training at the time. He didn’t know how it would all come together or even that there were networks like Send Network to help.

But he knew this: if God was calling him, the only right response was obedience.

So, he prayed for vision. And God gave him one.

A community-impacting church. A church grounded in the Word—a place that would grow, stand firm on truth, and become a beacon of light in the community.

A place people wouldn’t avoid—but run to—for help.

Small Beginnings, Faithful Steps

Rescue Shop Church began meeting in a community senior center. It wasn’t ideal—space was limited, and resources were few—but they made it work. And they didn’t wait to engage the community.

The first outreach was simple: a women’s clothing giveaway. What started as a small step to serve became a ministry now known as Reloved. As other needs became clear, the church expanded its efforts—adding Refresh, a hygiene ministry, and Refuel, a food outreach.

Clothing. Hygiene. Food. A simple, repeatable way to serve people with dignity and care.

At first, the events were small—just a social media post with a time and place and an invitation to come and receive what was needed. And people came.

Encouraged by the response, the vision grew.

Seasonal events followed—fall gatherings, Christmas outreaches. Attendance climbed: 300, then 400, then 500.

Then came a turning point.

A Christmas event welcomed 900 people the first time it was held. Something was shifting.

Over the next year, that momentum accelerated. The back-to-school event served 1,055 people. By Christmas, 100 volunteers helped serve 3,012 people in a single day—the largest event yet.

What began as a few pop-up outreaches had become a consistent, community-reaching movement.

Simplicity made it possible. And that same simplicity is what makes it sustainable—and reproducible.

More Than Meeting Needs

At every event, there’s a deeper purpose.

As people move through the line, an evangelism team is already at work—trained, prepared, and ready. They’ve practiced gospel conversations, thought through difficult questions, and learned by listening to others, so when the moment comes, they’re not guessing.

They’re ready.

They ask simple questions, and conversations unfold naturally.

T.J. has found that some of the most meaningful moments happen while people are waiting—when there’s time to listen, engage, and share without pressure. The result is conversations with people from all walks of life, many of whom would never walk into a church building.

That’s exactly who this church is for.

It’s a church that holds firmly to the truth while removing barriers so people can hear it.

A place where lives are transformed, and people begin a real relationship with Jesus.

In just one year, more than 150 people took that step of faith through baptism.

Keeping It Simple on Purpose

Even as the church has grown, T.J. has resisted the pull to overcomplicate things.

The focus remains clear:

  • Do Sunday well.
  • Serve people well.
  • Build growth groups.
  • Stay committed to outreach.

That same simplicity shows up in everything they do.

They’re not constantly reinventing their approach. They’re refining what works and staying consistent.

Because clarity creates momentum. And simplicity allows more people to participate in the mission.

A Pattern of Provision

Looking back, T.J. sees a pattern:

  • A need arises.
  • A challenge surfaces.
  • And then, God provides.

At first, it was stepping into the unknown without experience.

Then came support—through partnerships, relationships, and coaching that helped guide and strengthen the work.

Then came growth.

In the community senior center, the church began to outgrow the space. Weekend attendance climbed past 300. Children’s ministry grew to 60–70 kids.

They needed something more.

So, they prayed.

And once again, God provided. In an unexpected act of generosity, a building was given to the church.

For T.J., it was just another reminder: He may not have all the answers. But God does.

And from that same conviction, he’s already looking ahead—raising up leaders and preparing to send a team to plant another church in the near future.

Trust God in the Process

T.J.’s story is a picture of what happens when obedience meets simplicity.

You don’t need a perfect plan to begin. You don’t need complexity to make an impact. Start with what you have. Serve real needs. Equip people to share the gospel. Stay consistent—and trust God to provide along the way.

Because this has always been about reaching people right where they are and trusting God to do what only He can do.
